Poker Podcast by Phil Gordon

Quick post here, but I just enjoyed a World Series of Poker podcast on my way to work today that I wanted to share with my the poker-obsessed among my readers. Phil Gordon's podcasting semi-live from the 2005 WSOP, and despite being new to it, he's been fantastic, and, he's broadcast every day for the last 4 days, so I think he's committed to seeing through the entire tournament. He's had great interviews with Layne Flack, Daniel Negreanu, Eric Lindgren, Annie Duke, James Woods and others -- check it out at:

He ran around planet Earth!

An older neighbor used to run by our house almost every day -- his name is Rupert, and he is extremely pleasant. For the last several months, I've noticed that Rupert hasn't been running by anymore, and honestly, I worried that something bad may have happened. He'd invited me over for beer and chess many times, but I'd always let the busyness of life get in the way -- today I was out walking Zach, and decided to stop by.

Well, I needn't have worried. He was working on his house, as usual, and when I asked him why I hadn't seen him running in awhile, he said, "Well, David, I accomplished my goal, and so I took some time off from running to get some house projects done." (see, Rupert also has a habit of always having about 9 different projects in varying states of completion -- his wife or children have had to deal with that!).

"So," I asked, "what goal did you accomplish?"

Rupert responded, "I ran around Earth. I set a goal to run 24,902 miles before I died, so that I could say I ran around our planet. I did it. So, I'm taking a break."

We talked for awhile longer, and he introduced me to his wife, son, and neighbor -- what an interesting fellow. Sort of the Forrest Gump of Capitol Hill in Seattle :-)

As an aside, we bought some grape plants from his wife at their yard sale last summer (Rupert was at a school reunion in Austria, where he grew up, when we stopped for that), and they're doing wonderfully -- another great story there, in that the seeds for the plants came in Rupert's pockets when he emigrated from Austria to the United States. So, they've traveled quite a ways as well.

BLT Fish with Eugene

What a wonderful three evenings I've had in NYC -- tonight, Eugene met me near Union Square and we headed to BLT Fish, for a fun/delicious/casual dinner and relaxing catchup conversation on everything Eugene, Seattle, Amazon, Eugene-retirement and Dave-newjob related.

Calamari and I have seen our better days, but the spicy calamari appetizer was actually quite yummy. A delicious Striped Bass followed; and, of course, a crisp India Pale Ale wasn't far away.

From what I gathered, BLT Fish is the second or third in a restaurant franchise of sorts... the BLT stands for Bistro Laurent Tourondel, and he's got a BLT Steak somewhere in the big city as well. I hope it stays nice and cozy, but I fear that within 8 years we'll be seeing BLT alongside TGIF and ChuckECheese :-)

Bryant Park Cafe, Bar Pitti, and capped with Chumley's!

Had a great day of work-stuff in NYC today, and then headed out for fun/reunions with old friends. After work, stopped at Bryant Park Cafe and caught up with Kim, a friend from college who's now a muckety muck at ESPN (you go, girl!) -- was great to see her -- deep thoughts, i know, but we were both amazed about how 15 years can disappear. Parting comment was "see you when we're 50!". As an aside, Bryant Park was packed with people as the weather was ideal -- everyone seemed almost starved for sun.

Then off to meet high school friend Peter and his wife Lori at Bar Pitti in Greenwich Village (delicious Italian food) -- and then they showed me some New York history (the courtyard over which the original Rear Window was shot, and for a special capper event, took me to Chumley's -- I had always wanted to visit, as I had a friend in college with the nickname Chumley, and I know it was related to the bar -- what a fantastic pub -- you enter through a pretty much unmarked side door, and then descend into a throwback cozy environs -- I could see a person easily losing track of a day/week/year in there. Spent the rest of the evening discussing tsunami, g w bush, iraq, red vs blue, and more... was really wonderful.
